SCARECROW COMPETITION WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Despite the rain and a last minute decision to move into the Town Hall, the scarecrow competition on Sunday 7 June was  a huge success. Many thanks to those who took part - young and old, volunteers and competitors – everybody who helped to make this the wonderfully entertaining day that it was!

Almost 40 scarecrows were entered into the competition ranging from traditional scarecrows to crazy cooks, a clown, a fireman, a nurse, an army officer, baby scarecrows … the list goes on. There were also props galore… buckets, bikes, tables, ladders and watering cans.

Most scarecrows arrived between 12-1pm and there was a steady stream of visitors all afternoon. The Town Hall was full by judging time at 3.30pm when Tim Jackson announced the winners:

Best Traditional scarecrow by Luke Sharp

The Prize for the most traditional scarecrow was won by
 Luke Sharp with “Sudbury Crow”

The Prize for the Most Imaginative scarecrow went to

Ellie Lovejoy with "Henny"

The Best Retailer scarecrow prize was won by
David Sleath of Hudgies Hardware with “Mr Hudgie”

This fun community event promoted the work of Sudbury in Bloom and its entry into the Anglia in Bloom competition for 2009. Proceeds from the cake and plant stalls will contribute to the colourful planting around the town which should look at its best by judging day in mid-July.

The Sudbury in Bloom committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to this event, including those who donated plants and cakes for the stalls. Support was also provided by several businesses including:

  • Co-Op, Sudbury (provided squash and catering equipment)
  • Robert Mason of Sturmer Nurseries near Haverhill who obtained over 100 packets of seeds from his suppliers, Thompson & Morgan of Ipswich and Mr Fothergills Seeds of Newmarket.
  • Cherry Lane Nurseries in Long Melford
  • No. 1 Delicatessen and Cafe, Sudbury
  • Suttons Seeds from Paignton in Devon
The support of the retailers in Sudbury has been fantastic, many of whom displayed scarecrows outside their shops and in shop windows during the week leading up to the competition. Some of the scarecrows are still on display around the town so if you missed the great day out on Sunday, there is still  a chance to see some of the scarecrows!
